ATI Project Update: UAV Range Extender Designs Finalised

As successful winners of the joint government and industry funded ‘Building UK’s Leadership in Aerospace Technology’ Programme, Advanced Innovative Engineering (UK) Ltd are now leading a £1.1 million project to develop a completely innovative electrical power system for next generation unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

The programme, which is shaped by the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) technology strategy provides AIE (UK) Ltd with the opportunity to collaborate, research and develop new hybrid-electric propulsion technologies that will meet new demands within the fast growing global UAV industry.

ATI UAV Project Progression

As a completely innovative project, AIE and their consortium of partners are working towards the development of a game changing electrical power generation system that will significantly enhance the range and endurance of larger vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) UAV platforms.

Despite an increase in the popularity of remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) for surveying, inspections and search and rescue operations the use of these VTOL platforms is significantly hindered by limited range, sometimes around 1-hour approximate use. AIE’s collaborative involvement within the ATI Programme will work to boost battery life and flight-time for VTOL RPAS.

Since the announcement of the award in January 2016, AIE are currently within the design and analysis phase of the project. This involves using the latest 3D design and analysis software to finalise the initial engine geometry and core design that will utilise existing cooling technology patents and specialist composite material for a super lightweight engine that can deliver maximum power, endurance and TBO (time before overhaul).

With such a highly demanding project that will push the known boundaries of UAV capabilities it is imperative that AIE and their collaborative partners ensure extensive research and analysis is carried out in the initial phase of the project to guarantee that weight and endurance targets can be met effectively.
