Advanced Innovative Engineering Demonstrates Revolutionary Heavy-Fuel Wankel Rotary Engine at December Demonstration

Lichfield, UK – February 2025 — – Advanced Innovative Engineering recently unveiled its cutting-edge 225ACS Gen 5 Heavy-Fuel Wankel Rotary Engine at a demonstration held at its UK headquarters. Developed under a contract with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory, this event highlighted significant advancements in rotary engine technology to DEVCOM ARL members and key stakeholders.

The 225ACS Gen 5 engine represents a significant leap in engine design, tailored to meet Tactical Uncrewed Aircraft Systems requirements. It features an ultralightweight, high-power density air-cooled architecture achieved through advanced additive manufacturing techniques and topology optimisation tools. This rotary engine is capable of operating on various heavy-fuel types without requiring physical modifications. Its high-pressure Direct Injection fuel system and combustion geometry, developed using a “digital twin” with advanced 1D and 3D combustion models, provide exceptional operational flexibility.

“Reliably operating small engines on heavy fuels like jet fuels is extremely challenging, particularly for uncrewed aircraft systems,” said Dr. Mike Kweon, Program Manager of the ARL Versatile Tactical Power and Propulsion Essential Research Program. “I am so pleased that we could revolutionise a small rotary engine design to run well on jet fuels. This engine can be used for multiple purposes, not just uncrewed aircraft systems.”

Nathan Bailey, Managing Director of Advanced Innovative Engineering, added, “Our contract with ARL has enabled us to push the boundaries of rotary engine innovation. Utilising advanced additive manufacturing and simulation technologies, we’ve redefined efficiency, power density, and adaptability. This demonstration is the culmination of years of development, positioning this engine as a game-changer for Tactical Uncrewed Aircraft Systems and beyond.”
